Uncommon Wisdom for Your Season
Uncommon wisdom:
You can be ready, working, and still miss your moment. đŹ
But Proverbs 24:27 gives us a timeless strategy to avoid that:Â
It says (in my own words):
Finish your outdoor work. Prepare your fields. Then, build your house.Â
At first glance, it sounds like farming adviceâmaybe even a little backwards.
Shouldnât I build my house first? Then, take care of the fields?Â
Or at least, thatâs what I thoughtâŚ
But then I realizedâthis is more than just farming talk.
This proverb gives a life strategy on priorities and timing aka sowing into the future you want.
đđ˝ It reminds us to take care of what will take care of us, over focusing on comfort.
đđ˝ Because itâs not wise to build before you prepare.
đđ˝ And when you honor the season youâre inâyou prepare for whatâs next, on purpose.
Why Skipping Seasons Doesnât Work
Some seasons are for preparingâlearning, planning, strategizing.
Others are for tendingâputting in the work, adjusting as you go.
Some are for harvestingâenjoying the results of what youâve built.
And yesâsome seasons are for slowing down, pulling back, resting, reflecting.
â ď¸ But here’s the warning:
If you try to skip steps, rush the process, move ahead too quickly, or build before you’re ready . . .
You could miss your momentâeven if you’re working hard.
It all goes back to thisâŚ
đą If youâre in a planting seasonâplant.
𧹠If youâre in a building seasonâbuild.
đ¤ If youâre in a resting seasonârest.
â ď¸ But whatever you doâdonât skip the steps.
Trying to build before youâve prepared sets you up for unnecessary struggle.
Think about this . . .
â You donât start by quitting your job to launch a business.
â
You start by making a planâand getting your money right.
â You donât jump into leadership before learning the basics.
â
You start by listening, learning, and practicing humility.
â You donât rush into commitment before youâre emotionally ready.
â
You start by healingâand making space for something real.
â You donât expect deep faith without putting in time to pray, learn, and grow.
â
You start by spending time with God.
How to Know What Season Youâre In
Someone asked me: How do I know what season Iâm in?
I thought thatâs a great questionâand it starts with looking in the mirror. That means look at yourself, look at your life, look at what God is highlighting right now.
Is God showing you things to work on, learn, or strengthen?
Then, youâre probably in a preparation or planting season.
Is God opening doors, creating momentum, or giving you peace to move forward?Â
Then, that sounds like youâre in a building season.
Thereâs no shame in either one. But wisdom says: Know and honor the season youâre in (Meditate on Proverbs 10:5). Because when you do, you’re less likely to miss your moment to elevate and glow up.Â
đĄ Hereâs a highly underrated but helpful tip: Journal your day.
You can write it out, record voice notes, or even type quick thoughts in your phone.
This simple habit can help you see patterns and common threadsâespecially when your vision or faith feels foggy.
My Story: Preparation Saved Us Twice
One morning, my husband logged into work like usual.
Five minutes later, his entire department was gone.
No warning. No notice. Just like thatâeverything changed.
But we didnât panic.
Because years before that day, we felt this urge to live differently.
We didnât fully understand it, but we followed the feeling.
We called it Debt Do Us Partâour commitment to . . .
â Spend less
â Save more
â Pay off debt
â And prepare for the future
It wasnât fun.
It wasnât flashy.
Saying ‘no’ to people and things we wanted? That part hurt.
Some people didnât get it when we started saying no.
But we werenât thinking about peopleâs feelings or opinions. We were thinking about our future.
Then came the job loss.
And months later, a totaled car.
But we were coveredâbecause we had saved and had a second, paid-off car ready.
Looking back, we didnât see those moments coming.
But we were ready when the storm hit.
And that wasnât luck. That was graceâand preparation guided by Godâs wisdom.
Imagine what would have happened if we didn’t follow the urge to live differently. đŽâđ¨
Thatâs what Proverbs 24:27 is about.
Get your fields ready. Then, build your house.
In other words . . .
đ Prepare first.
đ Build later.
đ Donât get the order wrong.
Because when you honor the season you’re inâit can prepare you for whatever comes next.
It can position you to thrive in and after the storm. Remember the Bible story where Joseph prepared Egypt for a famine? Take a look at that story here in Genesis 41.
So, listen.
Follow the nudge to slow down and live differently.
Sow and plant discipline, self-control, and the needful things (priorities over comfort).
That way when things changeâyou have a harvest waiting.
Not by luck or accident either. But because you honored the season you were in.
I hope I’m making sense.
Final Takeaway: Honor Your Seasons
So, what season are you in?
Are you being nudged to pause, pull back, plan, learn, or lay a new foundation? That’s planting.
Or are you being called to build, launch, lead, or reap? That’s harvesting.
Whatever season you’re inâhonor it (Read this note about Proverbs 10:5).
â
Get your priorities in order.
â
Don’t rush the process.
â
And please donât skip steps.
Because what you do now will either set you upâor set you back.
