YOUR CHOICE WILL EITHER ADD TIME TO OR TAKE TIME FROM YOUR PROCESS
It took ancient Israel 40 years to secure the bag (God’s promise for them) when it should have taken days. Here’s what I mean. A part of Israel’s destiny was to take possession of Canaan. Canaan was the land that God first promised to Abraham and his descendants in Genesis 12:6-7. Centuries after Abraham died, the Israelites sat at the edge of this promise but rejected it.
At the time, Moses had just helped Israel to escape slavery in Egypt. After escaping Egypt, they came to the Red Sea, and after passing through the Red Sea, Israel went into the Desert of Sin. By the way, Sin is related to Sinai and not the English word sin. Also, the Desert of Sinai is known as the wilderness of Sin or the wilderness.
Now, the Desert of Sin was near Mount Sinai, and the trip from Mount Sinai, also Mount Horeb, to Kadesh-Barnea was 11 days (Deuteronomy 1:2-3). Kadesh-Barnea was the place Moses sent spies to scout the land of Canaan. And it was here that the Israelites sat at the edge of their promise (Canaan) and refused to take it.
ARE YOU SETTLING FOR LESS THAN WHAT GOD WANTS FOR YOU?
If you remember this story, Moses sent twelve spies to check out Canaan and all but two of these spies had something bad to say about it. Joshua and Caleb were the only two that had good things to say about Canaan. They believed God would let them beat whoever they needed to, so they could take possession of the land.
The other spies couldn’t think about what God could do because they were caught up in what they considered to be true. And what they believed to be true was Israel’s inferiority to Canaan. They thought they were grasshoppers facing off against giants.
Beliefs are powerful. Theirs made them forgot about what God had already done for them and what He’d promised to do. Their very irrational fears made them choose doubt and comfort over faith. Their beliefs were as poison. And their self-defeating talk put the majority in a state of worry, unbelief, and ultimately disobedience.
Israel settled for less than what God wanted for them, and if that wasn’t enough of a tragedy in itself, people died needlessly for it. Not to mention, God banned the entire first generation of Israelites from the promise. That is all except for Joshua and Caleb. Joshua and Caleb were able to enjoy Canaan, but it would be 40 years before they could (Numbers 14:20-45).
COMFORT IS OVERRATED, AND FEAR MAKES TERRIBLE DECISIONS
Stories like these and others from the scripture do more than help us understand faith and curate history. These stories give us the life advice we need to live our best life. They also help us avoid making superficial decisions because we crave comfort and are afraid.
Israel’s choice hurt them, but don’t let their story be in vain. Let their story inspire you to have the courage to go after what God wants for you! Let their story encourage you to make the best decision, and that is doing whatever God says.
To help get you started, add these four approaches to your decision-making process so that you can make better decisions fast!
- Ask God to transform you inwardly so you can discern His will (Romans 12:2).
- Pray a refocusing prayer.
- Ask God what’s holding you back.
- Calm yourself and do what He says.
