Uncommon Wisdom for Your Season
Uncommon wisdom:
You can be ready, working, and still miss your moment. š¬
But Proverbs 24:27 gives us a timeless strategy to avoid that:Ā
It says (in my own words):
Finish your outdoor work. Prepare your fields. Then, build your house.Ā
At first glance, it sounds like farming adviceāmaybe even a little backwards.
Shouldnāt I build my house first? Then, take care of the fields?Ā
Or at least, thatās what I thoughtā¦
But then I realizedāthis is more than just farming talk.
This proverb gives a life strategy on priorities and timing aka sowing into the future you want.
šš½ It reminds us to take care of what will take care of us, over focusing on comfort.
šš½ Because itās not wise to build before you prepare.
šš½ And when you honor the season youāre ināyou prepare for whatās next, on purpose.
Why Skipping Seasons Doesnāt Work
Some seasons are for preparingālearning, planning, strategizing.
Others are for tendingāputting in the work, adjusting as you go.
Some are for harvestingāenjoying the results of what youāve built.
And yesāsome seasons are for slowing down, pulling back, resting, reflecting.
ā ļø But here’s the warning:
If you try to skip steps, rush the process, move ahead too quickly, or build before you’re ready . . .
You could miss your momentāeven if you’re working hard.
It all goes back to thisā¦
š± If youāre in a planting seasonāplant.
š§± If youāre in a building seasonābuild.
š¤ If youāre in a resting seasonārest.
ā ļø But whatever you doādonāt skip the steps.
Trying to build before youāve prepared sets you up for unnecessary struggle.
Think about this . . .
ā You donāt start by quitting your job to launch a business.
ā
You start by making a planāand getting your money right.
ā You donāt jump into leadership before learning the basics.
ā
You start by listening, learning, and practicing humility.
ā You donāt rush into commitment before youāre emotionally ready.
ā
You start by healingāand making space for something real.
ā You donāt expect deep faith without putting in time to pray, learn, and grow.
ā
You start by spending time with God.
How to Know What Season Youāre In
Someone asked me: How do I know what season Iām in?
I thought thatās a great questionāand it starts with looking in the mirror. That means look at yourself, look at your life, look at what God is highlighting right now.
Is God showing you things to work on, learn, or strengthen?
Then, youāre probably in a preparation or planting season.
Is God opening doors, creating momentum, or giving you peace to move forward?Ā
Then, that sounds like youāre in a building season.
Thereās no shame in either one. But wisdom says: Know and honor the season youāre in (Meditate on Proverbs 10:5). Because when you do, you’re less likely to miss your moment to elevate and glow up.Ā
š” Hereās a highly underrated but helpful tip: Journal your day.
You can write it out, record voice notes, or even type quick thoughts in your phone.
This simple habit can help you see patterns and common threadsāespecially when your vision or faith feels foggy.
My Story: Preparation Saved Us Twice
One morning, my husband logged into work like usual.
Five minutes later, his entire department was gone.
No warning. No notice. Just like thatāeverything changed.
But we didnāt panic.
Because years before that day, we felt this urge to live differently.
We didnāt fully understand it, but we followed the feeling.
We called it Debt Do Us Partāour commitment to . . .
ā Spend less
ā Save more
ā Pay off debt
ā And prepare for the future
It wasnāt fun.
It wasnāt flashy.
Saying ‘no’ to people and things we wanted? That part hurt.
Some people didnāt get it when we started saying no.
But we werenāt thinking about peopleās feelings or opinions. We were thinking about our future.
Then came the job loss.
And months later, a totaled car.
But we were coveredābecause we had saved and had a second, paid-off car ready.
Looking back, we didnāt see those moments coming.
But we were ready when the storm hit.
And that wasnāt luck. That was graceāand preparation guided by Godās wisdom.
Imagine what would have happened if we didn’t follow the urge to live differently. š®āšØ
Thatās what Proverbs 24:27 is about.
Get your fields ready. Then, build your house.
In other words . . .
š Prepare first.
š Build later.
š Donāt get the order wrong.
Because when you honor the season you’re ināit can prepare you for whatever comes next.
It can position you to thrive in and after the storm. Remember the Bible story where Joseph prepared Egypt for a famine? Take a look at that story here in Genesis 41.
So, listen.
Follow the nudge to slow down and live differently.
Sow and plant discipline, self-control, and the needful things (priorities over comfort).
That way when things changeāyou have a harvest waiting.
Not by luck or accident either. But because you honored the season you were in.
I hope I’m making sense.
Final Takeaway: Honor Your Seasons
So, what season are you in?
Are you being nudged to pause, pull back, plan, learn, or lay a new foundation? That’s planting.
Or are you being called to build, launch, lead, or reap? That’s harvesting.
Whatever season you’re ināhonor it (Read this note about Proverbs 10:5).
ā
Get your priorities in order.
ā
Don’t rush the process.
ā
And please donāt skip steps.
Because what you do now will either set you upāor set you back.
