A very played out Bible verse
You’ve heard it.
You’ve probably said it.
‘The joy of the Lord is my strength.’
But do you really know what this means?
If we’re honest—most people don’t actually know.
And that kinda sucks because this verse is POWERFUL.
It’s NOT just a cute saying—to sprinkle over a bad day.
It’s NOT spiritual fluff.
It’s SO much more than:
🖼️ wall art
☕ print for coffee cups
👕 or t-shirts
This verse hits differently because of the backstory.
Hearing the story behind it helped me feel the verse, not just repeat it.
I think it might do the same for someone reading this…
The backstory
In Nehemiah 8, God’s people had just come out of exile.
They gathered to hear God’s Word — not casually, but with open hearts.
And when they heard it, it pierced them.
Conviction hit.
Tears flowed.
I imagine they realized how far they had drifted from God.
But right there—in the middle of their tears—their leaders spoke out:
Don’t grieve.
Don’t mourn.
The joy of the LORD is your strength.
That line wasn’t a ‘chin up buttercup’ pep talk.
That line comforted a crowd of people crying their eyes out—freshly cracked open by truth and hit with conviction after hearing God’s word.
And what’s really beautiful?
When the leaders told the people, ‘Do not grieve, for the joy of the LORD is your strength,’ they weren’t telling people to ignore their feelings.
They were pointing them to God.
✨ The One who could help them.
✨ The One who could heal them.
✨ The One who could hold them through it.

When truth hurts before it heals
Sometimes when truth hits your heart,
— it doesn’t feel good at first.
It stirs guilt.
It raises regret.
Guilt can expose things we’d rather keep hidden.
Stuff we’ve ignored or concealed versus confronted to heal.
But feeling those things isn’t failure — it’s actually a sign of life.
AND more than that… an opportunity for growth. 💔➡️💖
Why?
Because conviction isn’t the end of the story—it’s there to mark the beginning of restoration.
So, it’s sorta like conviction is the nudge and restoration is God’s embrace.
And that’s why this VERSE HITS SO HARD For me.
When what feels heavy is holy
Years ago, I was standing in church, serving as an usher.
I was a new believer in Christ—full of hope, faith, and joy.
But that day felt different.
As I stood at the door, greeting and guiding people, inside I felt this weight.
It wasn’t sadness.
It wasn’t burnout.
It was just… heavy.
I didn’t say anything.
Didn’t tell anyone either.
I just stood there and did my job.
Then my spiritual leader said something like:
What you’re feeling is the weight of God’s glory.
I tear up now thinking about that moment.
Because what felt heavy to me was actually holy.
That day I realized (for myself)—God’s presence doesn’t always feel light and good.
Sometimes conviction presses on your heart.
Sometimes it exposes what needs healing.
Sometimes it’s quiet—but cuts deep.
Maybe I’ll write about this later… but ask Isaiah.
In Isaiah 6, when he experienced God’s glory, it wasn’t soft or cozy.
It was weighty.
It shook the temple (Isaiah 6:4).
It shook Isaiah.
And Isaiah didn’t walk away hyped about it either—he fell to his knees, convicted (Isaiah 6:5).
But then…
That same weight that convicted Isaiah also commissioned him! 🥹🙌🏽
Purifying Isaiah and guiding him deeper into purpose (Isaiah 6:6-8).
I think that’s what was happening to the Israelites in Nehemiah 8.
A call to something higher
So, that day in church…
What I thought was heaviness was actually God drawing me closer.
Just like in Nehemiah 8…
The people felt a weight.
But that weight wasn’t meant to break them.
It was meant to build them.
That’s means conviction is an invitation—to get closer to God!!
The same goes for me and you (if that’s what we want).
How to respond when conviction hits
1️⃣ Pause:
Ask God to highlight where He’s convicting your heart.
2️⃣ Listen:
Sit with scriptures that challenge you, not just comfort.
3️⃣ Write:
Journal what you sense God showing you.
4️⃣ Move:
Ask God how to turn conviction into one small, IRL change.
5️⃣ Worship:
Let God’s joy meet you on the other side of conviction.
A prayer to get us started…
God, thank YOU for Your Word. I’m thankful Your Word doesn’t just comfort me—it convicts me, shapes me, and calls me to something higher. When truth pierces my heart, help me to lean into Your truth and not to run from it. Transform my tears into joy and my conviction into strength. So, that in moments when conviction feels heavy Your joy carries me through. In Jesus’ name, amen.
Final thoughts
➡️ Sometimes truth hurts before it heals.
➡️ Sometimes what feels heavy is actually holy.
➡️ And sometimes the strength you need isn’t pretending ALL is okay, but it’s in letting God meet you right where your heart feels conviction.
