Are You Shining Your Light in the Light?

Recently, my daughter Jade was in my room with me and randomly asked about the flashlight feature on my cell phone. “How does it work momma?” she said, and I responded, “Turn it on and see.” She quickly answered with, “You can’t see the light in the light,” then turning the light off in the room she said, “It has to be dark for you to see the light!” As my eight-year-old looked at me like duh mommy, I was like ouch and amen at the same time, while thinking to myself, “What a profound statement.

Her comment made me reflect on how comfortable most Christians (Light) are around other Christians (Light), which has caused us to become increasingly content and complacent with shining our light in places where there is frankly already enough. We have basically hidden our light under a bushel when we need to go where it is dark to let the light of Christ shine!

Jesus shined His light in the darkness. When he was badgered about being around those that others deemed less than deserving, He responded with “Only the sick need a physician!” He said this to make clear that His Light benefited those in darkness.

God wants us to let our light shine in darkness so that others may see, responding with “What must I do to be saved?” In the darkest places, Christ’s light shines the best! And even in your darkest hour, the light, and love of Christ are there to penetrate despair and bring hope. Sometimes we wonder “Lord, why is this so hard? Why is such great darkness all around me and constantly trying to overtake me?” When this happens, I want you to remember that greater is He that is in you than he that is in the world and that the darkness gives you an opportunity to shine!

So, I tell you, yes it’s dark but arise and shine for the light has come. You are the light, therefore let your light shine!
