Winter is for clarity
I’ve been knee-deep in my EOTY rhythm.
You might know it.
The season is quiet.
But not all-the-way quiet.
Where I clear, clean, and slowly make peace with my year.
For me, that looks like full cleanup and clear-out mode…
With some DIY projects happening too.
Lock in and I’ll tell you how winter is helping me reset my life.
*EOTY = end of the year*

The slow unfolding of a reset
I kicked off September with deep cleaning.
The kind that stirs emotions.
Because I got rid of some stuff.
October rolled in with me sampling paint.
One color.
Then another.
And another.
November was quieter.
More clearing.
More cleaning.
Less deciding.
December finally brought clarity and commitment.
It took me until 12/10 to finally choose paint colors.
But once I did, things moved fast.
Like done-in-days fast.
Patching normal family wear-and-tear dents.
Then sanding.
And finally painting.
My husband and I refreshed some furniture too.
– a wooden garden bench
– an antique wardrobe
– a mantle I rescued from the roadside

The mantle is my favorite project so far.
We painted it Sealskin.
A rich, moody color (my opinion).
It’s giving full dark academia.
I love it.
My husband loves it.
Matter of fact…
I love what paint does to a space.
For me, fresh paint feels like a new haircut or hairstyle.
Same person.
Same place.
Completely different energy.
And guess what else?
Somewhere in the middle of all that painting, I started making art again.
Because that’s what clearing and cleaning does…
It makes room.
Side note:
I find the best roadside gems going through historic neighborhoods.

From sketches to real life
I started sketching again.
First—an open airy, console table.
My husband built it.
Next—a custom open wardrobe.
He built that too.
I’ve still gotta paint it, but comment for ‘as is’ pictures.
Last week, I measured and sketched an upper kitchen cabinet.
Up next on my list: bar stools.
I wanna reupholster them.
I hope to wrap it all up in the next two weeks.
But if I don’t?
That’s okay.
In my mind, I have all winter.

Why winter gives me clarity
Winter gives me permission to move at a gentle pace.
Making it the perfect season for clarity.
And not because everything stops,
— but because so much winds down.
For our family,
winter break is here.
For my husband and me,
we’re wrapping up the fiscal year, tying loose ends.
For our garden,
it’s rest season.
We’re still planting, but it’s calm.
❌ Because there’s no urgency
❌ No need to sprint outside
❌ No mad dash to save my plants from heat like in summer
The AHA moment ✨
Winter gives me clarity because it’s…
It’s slower.
Quieter.
Less to look at and handle.
And because of that, I see more.
Literally.
I’ll explain that next.

Clarity comes after the leaves fall
Today I looked out into our garden.
And I see a garden paused, not gone.
It’s got me thinking about pruning trees…
– pecan
– a five-foot weeping redbud
– fifteen-foot-tall fig tree
– and a forty-ish-foot maple
You know what they all have in common right now?
🚫🍁 No leaves.
They’re deciduous and shed their foliage every year.
That means I can see their canopies.
Their structure.
The bones of a thing.
What needs to stay and what needs cutting back is SO obvious.
The translation?
Winter strips away the excess.
And what’s left tells the truth.

Stop kicking against the season
Some people tolerate winter.
Others rush toward spring.
Me?
I’m letting myself enjoy the season.
And if you’re here,
reading this blog,
this might be your sign
to slow down,
to pull back,
to see more clearly.
Which brings me to the point…
Clarity often shows up when things quiet down.
Clear vision sometimes comes when things fall away.
In my case: leaves. 🍂😆
So, look around.
You might see something you need to see.
Speaking for myself here…
This reset and change is a slow glow-up.
– It’s an unfolding, not a flip of the switch.
– It took months, not moments.
– It took sampling, waiting, and deciding.
– Sketching, building, and even rebuilding.
– It took stillness and patience.
And I’m more than okay with that.
Because there’s no prize for finishing faster.
My goal is just to finish.
Even if finishing looks different than I expected.
I’ve said this for years: It’s okay to adjust your expectations. The outcome may be different from what you expected. But different can be better!
Unlock what you’ll actually appreciate
Let’s wrap this up!
You’ve made it to the end of this blog. YAY.
By now, you’ve realized this isn’t really about cleaning, painting, fixing furniture, or growing trees.
This blog is about:
– discernment
– seeing clearly
– and letting God use seasons to guide you
If that connects with you—
