Roadside rescue
Right before trash pick-up day…
I spotted a lonely little wooden bench on the side of the road
⸻ hours from its final goodbye.
I couldn’t believe someone was throwing it away.
So, I made a quick call and rescued her.
My opinion: If it’s cute and saveable, you save it. ✨
Fast-forward to this past week —
My husband and I finally started restoring the bench.
And listen… The entire seat was gone.
Not cracked.
Not loose.
Just gone-gone.

Divine moment unlocked
Off we went to Lowe’s and somehow found the perfect replacement wood sitting on the discount cart.
For 50% off.
Like it was literally waiting for us. 👀✨
We grabbed the wood and screws.
Brought it home, measured everything twice, made the cuts, and got to work.
Our materials:
❤︎ 2-in x 2-in x 8-ft wood (1/quantity)
❤︎ 1-in x 2-in x 8-ft wood (6/quantity)
❤︎ 1-1/2-in Epoxy Exterior Wood Screws (75/quantity)
Total cost for the wood and screws?
Way less than buying a new bench to match our garden aesthetic.

Tiny hack, big difference ✨
When laying the new seat slats, we used a single piece of wood as a spacer. The ‘spacer’ helped guide us to:
1️⃣ keep our lines straight and 2️⃣ keep our spacing even.
We worked from left to right, and by the time we reached the end, the spacing had tightened just a little.
Nothing wild — (my opinion) the seat still looks really good.
But next time?
We might switch up the strategy.
Instead of going left-to-right (or right-to-left), we’ll alternate sides and work our way toward the middle.
That way the spacing stays balanced,
the lines stay centered,
and the whole design gives that intentional symmetry I love.
I’m also considering upgrading the seat support beam — maybe using something wider than the 2-in x 2-in x 8-ft wood we got.
To be honest — my husband thinks I’m extra-extra (at times) …
So, we’ll see. I’m still feeling it out.

The final steps (kinda)
Now that our new sturdy seat is in place, here’s what’s next:
❤︎ sanding everything smooth
❤︎ painting it a Tree Bark color
❤︎ sealing it with a protective coat
That means we’re NOT even close to finish.
But this little roadside rescue is off to a great start.
And already looking like it was made for our garden!
I’m SO proud of my husband.
