Do you know the Birkin bag was born out of simple need?

Yep. Jane Birkin had a messy situation on a flight from Paris to London. Her bag was too small, so she spilled a few things on a flight. This was frustrating…and for some, even embarrassing.

As chance would have it, Jean-Louis Dumas, then CEO of Hermès, heard Jane’s plight and offered to make a bag. On that flight in 1983, he sketched the initial design on a sick bag.

And a short time later, in 1984, the Birkin made its official debut.

It was functional, elegant, exclusive, and NOW instantly iconic.
