The Third Gender
Nonbinary represents something that’s not restricted to two things or two parts. In the case of the third gender, those two things are the male and female sexes.
Currently, there are a growing number of American’s that identify themselves as such and prefer to be addressed with gender-neutral expressions. For example, instead of using pronouns like she or him to address a nonbinary identifying person, you’d say they or them.
The Evolution of Gender Neutrality
So here’s a quick breakdown on the evolution of gender:
- Cisgender – of or relating to a person whose internal sex corresponds with their birth sex.
- A cisgender’s personal identity and birth sex are the same.
- The first known use of the word cisgender was in 1994 [1] and it was added to Merriam Webster’s dictionary April 2017.
- A cisgender’s personal identity and birth sex are the same.
- Transgender – of or referring to a person who identifies with a sex opposite to their birth gender.
- A transgender’s personal identity and birth sex are different.
- The first known use of the word transgender was in 1974. [2]
- A transgender’s personal identity and birth sex are different.
- Nonbinary– a person that identifies as neither male nor female.
- A nonbinary’s personal identity does not fit into either the male or female binaries.
- The first known use of the word nonbinary was in 1863. [3]
- A nonbinary’s personal identity does not fit into either the male or female binaries.
Nonbinaries are in fact the third gender.
