My #1 Writing Rule

Begin ANYTHING you do with ONE strong idea.

A podcast

A how-to video

A book

A blog

An email

A script for a video.

Talking points for a speech.

Show notes.

Course content.

And anything you write for social media.

Captions, posts, and video scripts included.

Whatever it is — let it start with ONE strong idea…let it stay focused on that ONE strong idea…and let it end with that ONE strong idea.

Here’s why.

Giving too much information or ideas at once can confuse and overwhelm your audience. So don’t.

Below you’ll find a best practice that makes my content writing better instantly.

Write better content instantly too. Just follow the three steps below.

These steps can make good writing better and even make bad writing work on social media.

Don’t believe me? Just listen to Episode #124 and apply the steps below.

Begin with ONE strong idea.

Whatever you’re writing should start with ONE strong idea. It should stay focused on that ONE strong idea. And it should end with that ONE strong idea.

Repeat the ONE strong idea.

Sometimes writing is bad because it’s all over the place. It leads the reader away from the reason you’re writing.

Don’t lead the reader away from your ONE strong idea. Instead, write in a way that continually draws them back in  — by repeating your ONE strong idea.

End with ONE strong idea.

Avoid the fatal flaw of overstuffing your work with too many thoughts. Doing this makes it hard to close with your ONE strong idea.

Having a lot to write is usually a sign that you need to turn those thoughts into a series. So instead of overstuffing your work, break it into sequences. Then turn those sequences into a series for a blog, book, video, podcast, or something else.
