END OF THE YEAR PRESSURE

As the year comes to a close, you may be reflecting on things and feeling happy, indifferent, or anxious about what you’ve done.

Those of you that are happy have focused on your future throughout the year. Those of you that are indifferent are too foolish to care right now. And those that are anxious are probably trying to play catch up.

If that’s you, and you’re anxious about what you haven’t done, this message is for you.

ARE YOU TRYING TO PLAY CATCH UP? DON’T.

Procrastination is intentionally putting off a task and in some cases, even looking for distractions to stop from doing what you need to.

The truth is, everyone has done it. We’ve all wasted time, and it’s almost always because we’re putting off something difficult. So, don’t beat yourself up. Instead of going into panic mode, which by the way clouds your judgment, breathe and resolve that you may not be able to do everything you wanted, but you can do something.

Now that you’ve calmed down a bit use these tips to help you beat procrastination like a pro. Oh, by the way – this message is available on podcast, so check it out too!

WHAT TO DO AFTER YOU’VE WASTED TIME

  • Reach out to anyone that’s involved in the assignment. If you are a creator, as a courtesy, give your client an update.
  • Next, work on a plan to get your stuff done. Ask yourself Gary Keller’s focusing question: “What’s the ONE Thing I can do such that by doing it everything else will be easier or unnecessary?”
  • From there, see if you can get an extension. Since you used the focusing question to help you figure out the best thing to do, go to your point of contact with a plan. Hopefully, the plan can help you redeem yourself.
  • If you can’t get an extension, look at what you have to do and work backward. Here’s an easy way to do this. Write your deadline on a calendar, then write everything you need to do to accomplish it. Once you’ve laid out the details, set mini-goals, and schedule deadlines for yourself — work on finishing your job, one measurable goal at a time.
    • Students, if you’re missing assignments – start with the tasks that carry more weight first. If you can’t finish everything on time, at least the smaller assignments won’t be done, not the big ones.

Remember, at this point in the game less is more — so, prioritize what you need to do on a scale of importance. And don’t spend your energy on being anxious because you honestly don’t have time for that.
