After weeks of almost non-stop rain…
🌤️ The sun finally came out in North Carolina.
I slipped into my Crocs, wandered into the garden, and saw my tomato plants had gone absolutely wild.
As I went to work (pruning and staking vines)
—I saw them, 3 plump green hornworms.
Hanging out like they owned the place! 🐛🤮
Like… y’all really eating rent-free in MY garden?
But jokes on them — ’cause nature has a clapback.

This blog is all about:
⚫ Free, natural pest control for hornworms
⚫ How nature sometimes helps us fight back
⚫ And what to watch out for in your garden

The discovery
I don’t want hornworms visiting my garden.
They can strip a plant bare quicker than you notice. 🚫🐛
When I see them, I pluck them right away,
—but always after checking for one thing…
The wasp rule
If a hornworm has tiny white ‘rice’ cocoons on its back, I leave it.
Because it’s already doomed. ☠️
Those little cocoons?
They’re a parasitic wasp nursery.
And that’s a good thing.
What’s really going on:
- A Braconid wasp lays eggs inside the hornworm.
- The larvae hatch → feed on it from the inside out.
- Before hatching, they make those white cocoons you see.
- Soon, new wasps emerge to hunt down more hornworms.
And guess what else they eat?
⚫ Caterpillars
⚫ Beetles
⚫ Aphids
⚫ Squash bugs
⚫ Stink bugs

That means when you see a hornworm with ‘rice’ on its back:
⚠️ No action required, because it’s already dying.
⚠️ Plus, it’s eating only ⅕ of what a healthy hornworm would.
On top of that?
Soon the hatching wasps will go after other pests in your garden.
🥳 That’s free, natural pest control right there.

What happened next
Back to my story…
What happened to the hornworms I found that day?
❌ They had NO cocoons.
❌ Which meant they were still very much alive —
❌ And very much a threat to my tomatoes.
So, I plucked them off.
And turned them into little chicken treats.
Gross to see.
But filling for my flock. 🐓
Shout-out to my family Araceli for telling me chickens love eating hornworms!!

Learning from my experience
Can I rant and rave for a minute?
Sometimes we do things ONLY because that’s what we’ve been told.
We don’t always stop to ask why.
Or really learn the reason behind the advice.
But… learning hits different than just doing.
And this was one of those moments where I’m like…
I’m glad I paused to learn what those ‘rice’ cocoons actually were.
It made me say,
Ohhh… I get it now.
And now I know — in the garden,
Sometimes the ‘gross thing’ 😵💫 in front of you…
It’s NOT the problem.
Sometimes it’s part of the solution. 🌱✨
