While posting a prophetic word on Instagram I heard “the blessing of the Lord will overtake you.” God communicates with us ALL in various ways and one of the first ways He began to speak to me was with scriptures, so I immediately went to His Word for clarity.
And all these blessings shall come upon you and overtake you if you heed the voice of the Lord your God.
Deuteronomy 28:2 Amplified Bible (AMP)
Overtake is a very interesting word to use in reference to a blessing. Traditionally overtake implicates something negative.
According to Oxford Dictionaries, the definition overtake means:
- Catch up with and pass while traveling in the same direction.
- Come suddenly or unexpectedly upon.
THE PATH OF GOD’S BLESSING HAS BEEN SET. They will find us. Essentially, there’s no need to position ourselves to receive it, because we should already be in position. The only requirement is obedience. The course has been set and GPS confirms the route the blessing is traveling on is the highway to God, a narrow path often spoken of but not so commonly found. If you are walking in obedience you are automatically in position and by default the blessing is coming to you!
SINCERE SURRENDER TO GOD IS NON-NEGOTIABLE. Preceding Deuteronomy 28:2, verse 1 reads: If you will listen diligently to the voice of the Lord your God, being watchful to do all His commandments which I command you this day, the Lord your God will set you high above all the nations of the earth. (AMP) It’s now or never. The next opportunity to abandon what we think is good for us and yield to God, who knows what’s good for us, isn’t guaranteed.

In this same chapter the verses that follow continue to elaborate on the blessings of the Lord, as well as lay out the opposite, curses for the disobedient (Deuteronomy 28:15-68). Interestingly enough, God uses more descriptions with the curses for disobedience versus His blessings. God won’t force us to choose Him, but takes special care to warn us and compel us to accept His love.
Blessings in God’s kingdom span further than just monetary facets, here are a few distinctions mentioned in the text:
- Promotion (verse 1)
- Increase (verse 4)
- Protection against enemies (verse 7)
- Protection against lack (verse 8)
- Honor (verse 10)
- Prosperity for oneself, offspring, work (verse 11)
- Abundance (verse 12)

BE CONTENT. Godliness with contentment is great gain. Avoid overspending and unnecessary purchases. “And it is, indeed, a source of immense profit, for godliness accompanied with contentment that contentment which is a sense of inward sufficiency is great and abundant gain.” (1 Timothy 6:6 AMP)
LISTEN TO THE PROPHETS, ASK GOD FOR WISDOM & APPLY IT. As I prayed about the release of blessings, God quickened a scripture to mind found in Genesis 41. Specifically, Joseph’s interpretation of Pharoah’s dream about the seven fat cows and the seven ugly cows. The latter, sickly cattle ate the fat ones, symbolizing the famine to strike the land. The only reason Egypt and the Israelites were spared is because of Joseph’s interpretation and the wisdom applied to properly budget during the season of prosperity.
