The Eggs Are Finally Rolling In

We got our first baby chicks on March 19, 2025.
And another set on May 6, 2025.
Then, on Thursday, July 10th our Bantam laid her first egg.
That same day, one of our Americana chickens laid an egg too.
On August 4th?
A third layer gave us an egg. 🎉
These eggs? They’re all giving soft girl shades.
The colors?
Blush cream.
Blue-green.
And mint green.
Right now, things are moving slow because less than half our flock is laying eggs.
No complaints here.
Because it gives me time to figure out what’s next.
What’s next?
Storing our eggs — and eventually serving them up to others!

If You’ve Done This Before…Help
So, now I’m asking myself…
Do I need cartons?
Date stickers?
Egg care tip inserts?
Or maybe more?
To be honest, I don’t know what all I need—but I’m working through it. If you’ve been here before, please let me know.
For now, I wrote myself an Egg Care Cheat Sheet.
How Long Eggs Last
Here’s how I’ve been keeping our eggs fresh.
🥚 Unwashed + unrefrigerated last about 2 weeks
🥚 Unwashed + refrigerated last about 3 months (or longer)
🥚 Washed + refrigerated last about 2 months
In case you’re wondering…
🚫🧼Unwashed eggs have a natural protective coating that helps them stay fresh and safe to eat.
How to Wash Fresh Eggs
Here’s how we gently wash our eggs before we use them.
- Use a clean hand or soft brush to remove dirt or chicken poop.
- Rinse quickly with warm water (warmer than the egg — no soap).
- Dry + cool eggs right away.
- Then, store in the fridge at 32°–40°F.
Update (Oct. 27, 2025): I recently corrected the order of steps in the ‘How to Wash Fresh Eggs’ section—just to make sure it’s super clear and accurate.

No Matter What – Never Forget
⚠️ Washed eggs must be refrigerated.
⚠️ Never soak eggs or use soap – it can push bacteria inside the shell.
⚠️ Store eggs with the pointy end down to keep ‘em fresh longer.
From Coop to Carton to Kinda Clueless
Having chickens is new to me and I’m learning as I go.
I read a helpful article from Purina Mills to learn how to safely store and wash fresh chicken eggs.

Got any tips for me?
Don’t hold back. I’m all ears.
Thank you. Mean that.
