HASHTAGS DECODED
Hashtags group information together on social media so people can sort through things better.
Hashtags MUST ALWAYS start with a # sign followed by a keyword or phrase. They work with emojis BUT do not work if you include spaces, punctuation marks, or symbols.
The key to winning with hashtags is to use what’s relevant.
Relevant hashtags are hashtags that other people are using. They are usually short and straightforward. They make sense to mass audiences and are true to their content.
No doubt about it. Using relevant hashtags will get you more likes, more comments, and more followers.
FOUR TYPES OF HASHTAGS TO USE
Brand Hashtags are great for raising brand awareness, promoting your business, and tracking brand campaigns. Pair Brand Hashtags with other hashtags to reach more people.
Popular Hashtags are highly trafficked and often linked to trending topics. Simply put, they reveal what is popular. Use them as idea generators for fresh content!
Related Hashtags are associated with specific themes or topics. They auto-populate on platforms like Instagram and Pinterest. Try it for yourself: search a hashtag, then see what other hashtags populate.
Niche Hashtags target unique audiences and are great for boosting genuine engagement. Use them with relevant hashtags that are popular or trending.
HOW MANY HASHTAGS SHOULD YOU USE
You can include up to 30 hashtags in an Instagram post and ten hashtags on a story — but using a STRONG NINE will likely be more effective!
Although Facebook lets you use as many hashtags as you want, Hootsuite recommends one to two per post. To see how your hashtag is doing on Facebook, search the following URL: facebook.com/hashtag/______ <— ADD your hashtag here!
Linkedin says to use no more than three hashtags per post, including a broad (aka Popular Hashtag) and a Niche Hashtag! They also auto-suggest hashtags for you!
Pinterest recommends using no more than 20 relevant and true to content hashtags per post. Here’s a plug! My Pinterest page is jumping — follow me there, @LolaCabaya.
You can use all the hashtags you want on TikTok — as long it doesn’t exceed 150 characters. Still, I say stick with less is more. It’s better to be intentional with a few hashtags versus all over the place with many.
Twitter suggests using two hashtags per post. To optimize your presence on Twitter, create twitter chats using trending hashtags.
For YouTube, do not use more than 15 hashtags. If you do, Youtube will ignore all hashtags for that video, and it could get your video removed.
FOR MY LONG HASHTAG WRITERS
